Our purpose statement is that Advent Designs Experiences that Move People. In September, some of our team will give that a literal interpretation. Advent will enter a team in the Red Bull Flugtag competition in Nashville on Sept. 23 to finally test our ability to design and build a vehicle to send one lucky volunteer airborne for multiple seconds. What is Red Bull Flugtag, you ask? The Flugtag is a contest for teams to design, build and pilot home-made flying machines off a 22-foot high flight deck over water. Teams are judged on distance, creativity and showmanship. After a brainstorming meeting, sketches, a 3D printer and perhaps some pizza and beer, the Advent team entered “Broken Record,” an homage to Nashville’s music tradition. Launched by reasonably accurate facsimiles of Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson and Billy Ray Cyrus, the glider carrying our fearless pilot, Travis Taylor (right), will float onto the horizon or crash spectacularly into the Cumberland River.
